A Farewell Full of Love

The story of Ndakasi, the mountain gorilla, truly touched my heart. Rescued as a tiny baby after losing her mother, she was taken in by ranger Andre Bauma in Congo’s Virunga National Park. From that moment, their lives became beautifully connected — a bond formed not by words, but by love.
What moved me most was how Andre didn’t just protect Ndakasi — he raised her with kindness, care, and joy. For over ten years, they laughed, walked through the forest, and shared a friendship that showed animals can feel just as deeply as we do. Their relationship reminded me that love and trust can grow between any two living beings.
Ndakasi’s final moments were heartbreaking, yet peaceful. She chose to rest her head on Andre’s lap — the place where she had always felt most safe. That moment brought tears to my eyes. It wasn’t just the end of her life, but a beautiful reminder that being loved until the very end is one of the greatest gifts.
This story reminded me how important it is to protect wildlife and to treat animals with respect and compassion. Thanks to people like Andre and the work done in Virunga National Park, many gorillas now live in safety. Ndakasi’s life may have been short, but it was filled with love — and that love continues to inspire the world.
