Muggs: The Grump We Somehow Love

The story of Muggs, the dog that bit people, made me laugh and think at the same time. Unlike most dogs remembered for their loyalty or sweetness, Muggs became a legend for doing the opposite — biting over 40 people! Yet somehow, he still managed to earn love, a monument, and even his own holiday tradition.
Muggs wasn’t your usual “good boy.” He was grumpy, unpredictable, and definitely not the friendly neighborhood dog. But he was deeply loved by James Thurber’s mother, and strangely enough, that love gave him a place of honor in the family. The idea of handing out Christmas chocolates to his “victims” is both hilarious and oddly heartwarming.
At first, I couldn’t stop smiling — the story is so unusual and funny. But as I thought more, I felt a surprising sense of warmth. Muggs, despite his rough behavior, was accepted and remembered with love. It made me realize that even the “difficult” ones in life can still be valued and cherished for who they are.
Muggs may not have been the nicest dog, but he was real — and that’s what made him special. His story reminds me that love isn’t always about perfection. Sometimes, it’s about accepting others, flaws and all. And maybe, just maybe, there’s room in our hearts (and cemeteries!) for even the toothiest little troublemakers.
