The Surprising Origins of Fries

When I read that the first record of fried potatoes came from Chile in 1629, I was truly surprised. Like many people, I always thought fries came from Europe, especially Belgium or France. But learning that their roots may actually be in South America completely changed my perspective on this popular food.

I felt curious and amazed by this discovery. It’s incredible how something as simple as fries — a snack we eat without thinking — has such a rich and unexpected history. It also made me feel more connected to other cultures, knowing that one of the world’s most loved foods may have started with the Mapuche people in Chile.

This story reminded me that history is full of surprises, and that we often overlook the true origins of the things we enjoy. It also shows how food connects people across time and continents. Fries are now enjoyed all over the world, but their journey started centuries ago in a completely different place than most of us believed.

After reading this, I’ll never look at fries the same way again. I’ll think about the story behind them — and how even everyday things can carry history and culture within them. This small fact reminded me to stay curious, and to always be open to learning something new, even from the foods on my plate.
